Foro Romano, Rome, Italy, March 2004 -- Carl Zeiss Biogon 21mm

Some years ago I became interested in photography. I read a lot about it, both on the web and in books, looked at thousands of pictures and took thousands of photos myself. This certainly does not turn me into an expert, but on these pages you can read some of the things I found out about photography -- if you like.

Kodak EasyShare V570:

The Kodak EasyShare V570 is the first compact digital camera which features two lenses and two 5 Megapixel CCDs. The lower one of the two lenses is a fairly average zoom lens of decent optical quality which covers a focal length range of 39-117mm f/3.9-f/4.4 (small format equivalent). The upper lens however is the reason to buy this camera: it's the first fast (f2.8) ultra wide angle prime lens (23mm small format equivalent) in a compact camera. The quality is indeed outstanding as the barrel distortion is already corrected by software inside the camera -- there is no offine correction of the downloaded pictures necessary. One of the nicest features is a built-in panoramic function: you can take up to three pictures and they will be stiched together already in the camera, i.e. you download directly the panoramics. With the 23mm lens this results in a 180° panoramic photo with just three shots! You can see instantly after taking the photos if they fit together -- and if they don't you can easily repeat one or all of the frames. Some first examples are on my blog. Reviews can be found at Imaging Resource, DCResource, Digitalcamerareview, Pocket-lint, and Digitalkamera.de.

Links & References

photo.net -- started in the early 1990s by Philip Greenspun from MIT as his personal homepage, photo.net became by now the probably largest and most active online photography community. You'll find many forums there where you can ask questions (and usually will get competent and helpful answers within hours!), equipment reviews, 10,000s of uploaded photos (you can of course upload your own pictures and ask for feedback) and a lot more.

Steve Hoffmann's Nature and Scenic Photography (sphoto.com) -- absolutely fantastic nature photos! I especially like his macros. Have also a look at his interesting Tech Tips.

Luminous Landscape -- Michael Reichmann displays on this website his beautiful landscape pictures. Well worth visiting, have a look!

Contax G User Pages -- officially Jim Williams closed down his Contax G User Pages by June 1, 2001, but they are still on the web and I hope they will remain there. When I decided to get a Contax G these pages were my main information source. After using the Contax G system for quite some time now I can only confirm that these pages are indeed very helpful.

Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras -- when I once asked a question on photo.net about the utilization of flash units in macro photography, N K Guy pointed out to me his webpage which answers every question you can think of about the sophisticated Canon EOS flash system.

Canon Tech Reports -- a useful place to get detailed information about Canon products. The Tech Report 2000.4 for instance describes the Canon Macro Equipment.

Competent equipment reviews can be found at

Camerareview, Fred Miranda and Photographyreview -- three websites where users can comment on equipment. Before I buy something I usually go there and read some reviews.

The Rasterbator is a tool which allows you to print really huge (up to 20 meters!), rasterized images from any picture. It sends back to you a PDF file with A4 pages which you can print and stick to your wall... ;-) here is an example. Try also PosteRazor!

Sometimes the driver of the Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 dpi slide scanner locks up and complains, that the software is already running. Which is not true. In this situation one needs to delete the following file:
